December 31, (THEWILL) – The Defence Headquarters has revealed that Nigerian troops neutralized over 1,000 terrorist commanders and killed 10,937 fighters, while also arresting 12,538 individuals in 2024.
Maj-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed these figures during a press briefing on Tuesday, highlighting the significant successes recorded by the military in the past year.
He listed several key commanders neutralized, including Dutse Mainasara Idda, Mallam Saleh Umaru, Mohammed Amadu, Chinemerem (aka Bam Bam), Jeremiah Uzuoma (aka Escoba), Tochukwu Awo (aka Ojoto), and Egwuatu, among others.
Buba also confirmed that the military rescued approximately 7,063 hostages during the year, dealing a severe blow to the terrorists’ operational capabilities.
“Throughout 2024, troops faced numerous security challenges, including armed banditry, kidnapping for ransom, crude oil theft, violent extremism, insurgency, and terrorism.
These threats disrupted the peace and security of many innocent citizens, he said, “In response, our operations were strategically designed to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and eliminate these threats, focusing relentless pressure on terrorist hideouts and strongholds.”
The DHQ also reported significant recoveries, including 8,815 weapons, 228,004 rounds of ammunition, and over N68 billion worth of crude oil stolen by criminals.
These included 4,332 AK47 rifles, 1,244 locally fabricated guns, 838 dane guns, 259 pump action guns, and 56 million litres of stolen crude oil, among other items.
Buba emphasised that troops would continue their efforts in the new year to further degrade the military capabilities of terrorists and oil thieves.
“The war against terrorism is not just the responsibility of the armed forces; it is a collective fight for all citizens. We urge greater public support to win this war,” Buba added.
