July 25, (THEWILL) — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that 5,281 road traffic crashes occurred across the country between January and June 2025, involving a total of 39,793 people.
Out of this number, 2,838 lives were lost, while 17,818 persons were rescued with varying degrees of injury.
The figures represent a 3.9 per cent increase in crashes and a 2.2 per cent rise in fatalities compared to the same period in 2024.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this during a press conference on Thursday in Abuja.
“During the same period, FRSC operatives arrested 290,887 traffic offenders for committing 319,798 offences.
“This marks a 16 per cent increase in arrests and a 14.9 per cent rise in offences compared to the 250,720 offenders and 271,895 offences recorded in 2024,” he said.
Mohammed noted that the uptick in arrests and infractions does not indicate a decline in the agency’s performance.
“On the contrary, it affirms that the Corps is more vigilant and responsive in ensuring road safety through visible enforcement,” he said.
He further revealed that over 30 million passengers travelled in 2.3 million vehicles across Nigeria’s road network within the six-month period.
He said the increased road traffic volume had a direct impact on the number of offences and offenders recorded.
“For instance, Anambra and Kano states alone accounted for over 6.5 million passengers, representing 22 per cent of total passenger movements nationwide.
“These figures demonstrate the immense pressure on road infrastructure and our personnel. However, let me state unequivocally that the FRSC is not overwhelmed.
“The Corps remains a resilient and committed institution, rising to meet the nation’s growing road safety demands with professionalism and innovation,” he added.
