June 20, (THEWILL) — Paraguay national football team revived their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Turkey national football team in a controversy-filled Group D clash at Levi’s Stadium.
Both teams entered the encounter under pressure after losing their opening matches, making victory essential for survival.
Paraguay wasted no time asserting themselves, taking the lead just two minutes into the match through Matías Galarza.
The early goal stunned Türkiye, who again dominated possession but struggled to convert chances.
The match turned controversial late in the first half when Miguel Almirón was shown a red card following a VAR review after a scuffle involving Turkish players.
Officials ruled that Almirón had covered his mouth while speaking to an opponent, violating FIFA’s anti-discrimination communication rule, widely referred to as the “Vini Jr. Rule.”
