July 28, (THEWILL) — Doctors under the Lagos State Government on Monday embarked on a three-day warning strike over what they described as “illegal” salary deductions.
The action, declared by the Medical Guild, began as early as 8:00 a.m., leaving many patients and their families stranded at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and other government hospitals across the state.
Chairman of the Medical Guild, Dr. Japhet Olugbogi, said the deductions by the Lagos State Treasury Office were “disrespectful and in violation of a prior agreement.”
He explained that the controversial pay cuts began in April 2025 but were later reversed after negotiations with the government. However, fresh deductions in July reignited tensions, prompting the strike.
“We had reached an understanding with the state government, and the deductions were halted. But in July, the same deductions reappeared, breaching the terms of our agreement,” Olugbogi said.
The Guild warned that the current strike is a warning action, and failure by the government to address the issue could lead to an indefinite industrial action.
