December 30, (THEWILL) — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over what it described as his “provocative” style of politics, saying his open declaration of support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election confirms the basis for his expulsion from the party.
The party, in a press statement issued following Wike’s end-of-year media chat, said the minister’s claim that he is the “number one supporter” of the presumptive APC presidential candidate, while still identifying as a PDP member, amounted to clear anti-party activity.
Signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party described Wike’s conduct as a pattern of political adventurism that undermines democratic norms and party cohesion, noting that his public alignment with an opposition platform was unprecedented for a senior figure, who once occupied key positions within the PDP.
Tracing Wike’s political history within the party, the PDP accused the former Rivers State governor of repeatedly fomenting crises in the party’s national leadership. It cited his role during the Ali Modu Sheriff era, his backing and later opposition to former National Chairman, Uche Secondus, as well as his involvement in the emergence and subsequent removal campaign against Dr Iyorchia Ayu.
The statement also pointed to developments in Rivers State under Wike’s leadership, alleging imposition of candidates, internal exclusionary practices, and the prevention of the PDP’s presidential candidate from campaigning in the state during the last general election as actions inconsistent with democratic principles.
According to the party, Wike’s politics thrives on conflict and calculated disruption, adding that his recent remarks reflected anxiety over diminishing political relevance and waning influence within both Rivers State and the PDP at the national level.
The PDP further alleged that Wike and his associates had now openly chosen to work against the party’s collective interest in favour of the APC, claiming this alignment was driven by narrow personal ambitions rather than ideological conviction.
Reaffirming its resolve ahead of the 2027 elections, the PDP assured Nigerians that it would present a credible presidential candidate capable of winning widespread support across the country.
“The Peoples Democratic Party belongs to the people, and no individual has the capacity to personalise it,” the statement said, adding that the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee was intensifying efforts to rebuild the party, resolve outstanding legal disputes, and position it for victory in 2027.
