August 06, (THEWILL) — Leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are making fresh moves to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election, THEWILL has learnt.
The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the development during an interview with BBC Hausa on Tuesday.
According to him, the party is reaching out to the former president in response to growing calls from Nigerians urging Jonathan to return to power.
“Nigerians have realised that Jonathan was a good leader and that many of the problems he was blamed for were not his fault. He also demonstrated great statesmanship by not rigging the 2015 elections, despite having the power to do so, unlike some of his predecessors. He chose the path of honour and conceded defeat to avoid bloodshed,” Abdullahi said.
Although former First Lady Patience Jonathan had earlier stated that her husband would not contest the 2027 election, Abdullahi revealed that the former president gave a “positive response” to the PDP’s overtures.
He noted that Jonathan requested certain assurances from the party before making a final decision.
“Some of the conditions he gave include being offered an automatic ticket if he agrees to run. However, he also said he would have to consult widely before getting back to us,” he said.
Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 and lost his re-election bid to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
