December 18, (THEWILL) — Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), confirming an earlier report by THEWILL.
THEWILL reportedin September that Mutfwang, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and two others, including Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, were set to defect to the APC.
Mutfwang’s defection was formally confirmed on Thursday by the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, during the party’s 14th National Caucus meeting held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
Yilwatda, an indigene of Plateau State, described the governor’s decision as a major boost to the ruling party, particularly in the North-Central geopolitical zone.
“With the defection of Governor Mutfwang, the entire North-Central region is now governed by the APC,” the party chairman declared to party leaders and stakeholders at the meeting.
He said the development reflects the growing influence of the APC in the region and increasing confidence in the party’s leadership and policies.
At the meeting, Yilwatda also announced the full activation of the APC’s electronic membership registration system, setting January 30, 2026, as the deadline for all party members to complete their registration.
According to him, the nationwide e-registration exercise is aimed at enhancing transparency, improving data integrity and strengthening internal democracy within the party.
“We have conducted training at the state, zonal and local government levels in most states. I urge all stakeholders to support the nationwide rollout of this important initiative,” Yilwatda said.
He assured new members of equal rights and privileges within the party, urging both old and new members to register themselves and their supporters on the APC’s digital portal.
“This exercise will run from now until January 30. All members must be registered and prepared for the congresses ahead,” he added.
The high-level caucus meeting was attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, principal officers of the National Assembly, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, APC governors, former governors, members of the National Working Committee and other key party stakeholders.
The APC leadership said the defection of Governor Mutfwang and the rollout of the electronic membership registration signal a new phase of consolidation and internal reforms within the ruling party.
