March 18, (THEWILL) — The Plateau State Government has signalled a possible appeal following a judgment by the Plateau State High Court declaring a four-year tenure for local government chairmen in the state.
The ruling, delivered on March 13, held that the two-year tenure prescribed under Plateau State law is inconsistent with Section 7(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended), effectively affirming a four-year term for elected council officials.
The case, filed by a local government chairman, sought constitutional interpretation on the legality of the shorter tenure, with the court ruling in favour of a longer term in line with constitutional provisions.
Reacting in a statement issued on Wednesday, Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, said the government is carefully studying the judgment with its legal team to fully understand its implications
He emphasised that the ruling focused on the interpretation of Section 7(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended) as it relates to the tenure of local government officials.
While reaffirming its respect for the judiciary, the government said it is currently studying the judgment in detail with its legal team to fully understand its implications and determine the most appropriate next steps.
“The government will consider all lawful options available, including seeking further appellate judicial clarification where necessary,” the statement said.
Despite the development, the government assured residents that the ruling does not in any way disrupt the day-to-day administration of local government councils or the delivery of essential services across Plateau State.
It urged citizens, community leaders, political stakeholders, and local government officials to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on maintaining peace and stability.
The administration reiterated its commitment to the rule of law, inclusive governance, and the orderly functioning of democratic institutions.
