October 28, (THEWILL) – Police in Ogun state have arrested a suspected a member of the Aiye confraternity, Ojo Iyanu, for allegedly trying to disrupt the ongoing examination at the Institute of Technology, Igbesa, in Ado-Odo/Ota local government area of the state
The suspect was arrested on October 26, 2021, following information that cultists were trying to disrupt the school examination.
The institution’s management and students’ union have been at loggerheads over the full and part-payment method of tuition fees before a candidate can sit for an exam, a situation that has crippled academic activities in the school for a while now.
However, as soon as the situation was resolved with the management deciding to allow students to write the exams, the suspect and his cohorts decided to ensure that the examination did not take place.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi who disclosed this in a statement in Abeokuta on Thursday, said the culprit was nabbed during the pre-examination student screening.
Oyeyemi said that upon the intelligence received, the DPO Igbesa, SP Abayomi Adeniji, in collaboration with other security agencies including men Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps(NSDC), and Ogun State Community Social Orientation Safety Corps(So-Safe) as well as the polytechnic security department decided to screen all the students before they enter the examination all.
“While the screening was going on, the suspect and one other who was late identified as ‘Aloma’ were intercepted with a black bag. While searching the bag, the second boy took to his heels while Ojo Akinola Iyanu was quickly arrested.”
“On interrogation, he confessed been a member of the dreaded Aiye confraternity. He confessed further that his group decided to disrupt the examination because the examination came suddenly and met them unprepared,” the Police PRO said.
The police recovered a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge.
Meanwhile, the Ogun state commissioner of police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for interrogation.
The CP also ordered that the remaining members of the group be found and brought to book.
