August 29, (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested eight suspects for allegedly creating 14 fake websites of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, represented by the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Isuku Victor, who disclosed this to newsmen at the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja, said 13 of the fraudulent sites have already been pulled down.
According to him, the arrests followed a formal petition from NIMC, which led to the dismantling of a syndicate involved in unauthorised access to the national identity database.
The IGP said efforts are ongoing to track down other perpetrators engaged in unlawful distribution, commercialisation, and access to government databases, stressing that, the police remain committed to combating cybercrime and safeguarding citizens’ data.
The Director of the NPF-NCCC, CP Henry Uche, warned Nigerians to be cautious of fraudulent links and third-party platforms harvesting personal data.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has reiterated the Commission’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the national identity database.
