April 19, (THEWILL) — Police in Ogun State arrested four suspects in different locations for allegedly possessing firearms and 17 live cartridges.
The suspects were arrested following intelligence-based operations by the police across Mowe, Sagamu and Odeda areas in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed this to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta on Sunday.
Oluseyi said that the police arrested a 36-year-old suspect, Opeyemi Anuoluwapo, for allegedly having one locally made pistol, one expanded cartridge and assorted charms.
He said that the suspect was arrested following credible intelligence received by Operatives of the Mowe Division about an individual loitering around the Mowe Bus Stop.
Babaseyi said that the operatives swung into action and arrested the suspect on April 14, 2026, at about 16:30 hrs.
“A search conducted on him led to the recovery of a single-barrelled locally made pistol, one expended cartridge, and charms concealed in his bag. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a member of the Eiye confraternity”, he noted.
Similarly, Operatives of the Quick Response Squad(QRS) arrested 30-year-old Ashaye Ajibola for allegedly owning a locally made single-barreled gun loaded with nine cartridges.
The Police PRO said the suspect was arrested during a stop-and-search duty at Lafarge along Sagamu/Ogijo Road, and intercepted a Bajaj motorcycle ridden by the suspect.
“A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of a locally made single-barreled gun loaded with nine cartridges. The suspect, who could not provide a satisfactory account of the firearm, was immediately arrested”, he stressed.
Consequently, the police also arrested a 49-year-old man, Adedeji Olufemi, for allegedly having a locally made double-barreled gun with eight cartridges.
Babaseyi said he was arrested by the Quick Response Squad (QRS) on April 18, 2026, at about 12:00 hours after the police intercepted his Honda motorcycle at the same Lafarge axis along Sagamu/Ogijo road.
“The rider, Adedeji Olufemi ‘m’, aged 49, was found in possession of a locally made double-barrel gun with eight cartridges. He was arrested on the spot after failing to give a satisfactory explanation regarding the firearm”, he stated.
Relatedly, the police have arrested a local vigilante member, Mutiu Sadiku ‘m’, for allegedly discharging a firearm that hit three persons in Odeda.
The Police Spokesperson said that the vigilante members accidentally discharged the firearm, resulting in the three persons sustaining injuries from it.
He said that the suspect’s firearm mistakenly discharged while he was returning from the farm.
“The suspect has been apprehended, and the firearm used in the incident has been recovered through collaboration with the Amotekun Corps”, Babaseyi said.
He noted that the victims had been taken to medical facilities, where they received treatment and are currently in stable condition and responding well to treatment.
The Police PRO said that the suspects in the above cases have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the proactive efforts and professionalism of the officers involved.
The CP reiterated that the Command will continue to intensify intelligence-driven operations against unlawful possession of firearms, cultism, and other violent crimes.
