August 14, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspects and recovered stolen vehicles and goods in a series of coordinated operations within Uyo, the state capital.
The arrests, carried out on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, followed directives from the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, to intensify the clampdown on vehicle theft and related crimes.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said the first operation took place at about 4:30 p.m. when operatives stormed a scrap dump at Mechanic Village, Abak Road, and caught a suspect, Uzoma Uche, in the act of dismantling a Peugeot 404 pick-up van believed to have been stolen.
In a follow-up raid on another scrap yard, officers arrested two other suspects, Alhassan Haliru, 29, and Aminu Zailai, 30, who were allegedly trying to sell a set of new spanners.
The men later confessed to stealing the tools from a local shop.
In a separate operation the same day, police recovered a stolen Toyota Camry linked to a car theft syndicate earlier reported on August 6, 2025. At about 4:00 p.m., operatives arrested Otoabasi George Ime in possession of the vehicle, with registration number BGM 934 DA.
Investigations revealed that the Toyota Camry was among several cars stolen by the dismantled syndicate. Efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining stolen vehicles.
“The Command will continue to intensify its operations to ensure stolen property is recovered and offenders are brought to justice,” DSP John stated, warning criminals in the state to desist or face prosecution.
