May 21, (THEWILL) – The officer, who accidentally shot and killed a 14-year-old student, Kehinde Alade, during a traffic enforcement operation on Tuesday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has been arrested.
The Spokesperson of the State Police Command, CSP Adewale Osifeso, said the officer, alongside other members of his team, are in custody.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at about 7:45 a.m. during a joint operation with the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA).
While the team attempted to stop a black Honda Accord, driven by the victim’s father, Odunayo Alade, for allegedly driving against traffic, the driver was said to have sped off, colliding with two OYTMA vehicles and a police patrol truck in the process.
“Officers suspected possible criminal activity or an abduction, prompting a chase. In an attempt to immobilise the fleeing vehicle, a police corporal fired at its tyres. Tragically, the bullet missed and struck young Kehinde, who was seated in the back seat of the car. He was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson Adenola, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to lead a thorough investigation into the incident.”
Kehinde’s body has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
The Command also expressed deep regret over the loss of life and extended its condolences to the family of the deceased.
