February 04, (THEWILL) — Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have dismantled a suspected fraud syndicate popularly known as “Utotoh” and rescued an 81-year-old pensioner during a coordinated operation in the Uyo metropolis.
The arrest, which occurred on Monday, February 2, 2026, followed credible intelligence provided by a concerned citizen.
This led to the swift interception of the suspects at approximately 3:30 p.m. Police sources stated that the syndicate specialized in luring unsuspecting residents into an operational tricycle, where victims were then dispossessed of their money and valuables through deceptive and fraudulent means.
Three suspects were apprehended during the operation: Otoabasi Ekpeyong, 51; Ubong Sylvanus, 42; and Sunday Akpan, 60. An elderly victim, identified simply as Friday, an 81-year-old pensioner, was rescued unhurt.
The police described the intervention as crucial in averting a potentially dangerous situation for the octogenarian.
Officers also recovered the suspects’ operational tricycle, with registration number UFG-886-QA. I
nvestigators noted the vehicle lacked a motor number, a tactic believed to be used to evade identification while carrying out criminal acts across Uyo and neighboring areas.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the suspects have confessed to the crime, admitting to defrauding several victims within the metropolis.
She disclosed that investigations are ongoing to identify other victims, obtain their statements, and arrest additional members of the syndicate who remain at large.
DSP John reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Akwa Ibom State and urged residents to continue supporting the police with timely information.
“The cooperation of the public remains critical in the fight against crime,” she said.
