April 29, (THEWILL) — The Police Service Commission has strongly condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi by police officers attached to the Effurun Area Command in Delta State, describing the incident as a grave violation of Nigerian laws and international humanitarian standards.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commission said the killing, which reportedly occurred on April 26, 2026, was unacceptable and inconsistent with the principles guiding professional policing, human rights protection, and the rule of law in Nigeria.
The Commission maintained that the action of the officers involved contravened several legal and regulatory frameworks, including the International Humanitarian Law, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Anti-Torture Act 2017, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, the Nigeria Police Act 2020, as well as the Nigeria Police Force Regulations 2025.
According to the PSC, security personnel are expected to operate within established legal boundaries and uphold the sanctity of human life while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
The Commission commended the Commissioner of Police in Delta State for swiftly initiating disciplinary measures against the officers implicated in the incident, including their suspension and interdiction pending the outcome of a full-scale investigation.
The PSC described the immediate action taken by the state police command as a necessary step towards ensuring accountability, restoring public confidence, and reinforcing professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
It stressed that acts of brutality, abuse of power, and unlawful killings have no place in modern policing and reiterated its commitment to supporting reforms aimed at entrenching transparency, discipline, and respect for human rights across security agencies.
The Commission further assured Nigerians that due process would be followed in handling the matter and that any officer found culpable after investigations would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.
While expressing sympathy with the family of the deceased, the PSC extended its deepest condolences over the tragic loss and urged residents and members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as justice takes its course.
The Commission also called on citizens to continue cooperating with lawful authorities while investigations continue, noting that accountability mechanisms within the police system must be strengthened to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.
