May 21, (THEWILL) — The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assured residents and stakeholders in Ekiti State of adequate security and professional policing ahead of the June 20, 2026 governorship election in the state, while warning political actors against violence and conduct capable of disrupting the electoral process.
A statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, stated that the assurance was given on Thursday during the Election Stakeholders’ Meeting and Signing of the Peace Accord held in Ado-Ekiti, where the IGP reaffirmed the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to guarantee a peaceful, secure, free, and credible election across the state.
The meeting attracted major electoral and political stakeholders, including representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the National Peace Committee, political parties and candidates, traditional rulers, civil society groups, religious leaders, security agencies, as well as members of the diplomatic and observer community.
The National Peace Committee was led by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, whose commitment to peacebuilding and democratic stability was commended by the police chief.
Disu commended INEC and the National Peace Committee for sustaining initiatives aimed at promoting peaceful democratic participation and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.
He stated that the Nigeria Police Force, working alongside other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), had concluded comprehensive deployment plans and operational strategies ahead of the election.
According to the IGP, security arrangements have been fully mapped out across the 16 local government areas, 154 wards, and over 2,400 polling units in Ekiti State, with personnel and operational assets strategically positioned to ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials, observers, and all participants during the exercise.
The police boss further assured residents that officers and men of the force would remain professional, impartial, and law-abiding throughout the election period.
He, however, cautioned political stakeholders against acts of violence, intimidation, and inflammatory conduct, urging them to respect the Peace Accord and conduct their political activities peacefully.
Disu also encouraged eligible voters to freely exercise their constitutional rights without fear, assuring them of adequate security before, during, and after the governorship poll.
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the protection of democratic values, maintenance of public order, and peaceful conduct of elections across the country.
