March 09, (THEWILL) – Operatives of Operation Puff Adder, led by DSP Chris Nwaogbo, have rescued two senior staff members of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) who were kidnapped on Friday near the river in Ayakoro community, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
The victims, Akari Loveday—Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to the NDDC Managing Director—and his brother, Emmanuel Nathan Ogbuku, were taken by kidnappers but later freed after a police operation.
A source close to the rescue team revealed that police engaged in a high-speed chase with the kidnappers along the creeks and rivers of Ayakoro, as well as through the Onuebum-Eboi and Otuogidi forests.
On Saturday, local youths and vigilante groups from Ewoi and Otuogidi provided intelligence and support. The Paramount Ruler of Ewoi urged them to assist security forces in rescuing the victims.
After a fierce gun battle, the kidnappers abandoned the hostages at the Ayama burial ground. The police believe the criminals were unfamiliar with the Bayelsa forest, which may have hindered their escape.
Members of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad also joined the Operation Puff Adder team in the rescue mission.
Following the successful operation, Ayakoro community residents erupted in celebration as DSP Chris Nwaogbo and his team returned with the freed NDDC officials.
