October 10, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced that it will commence full enforcement of the nationwide ban on vehicles with covered or obscured number plates across the state from Friday, October 10, 2025.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the Command warned that the directive applies to all categories of vehicles, private, commercial, government, and security agency vehicles — including those belonging to Very Important Personalities (VIPs) and their aides.
According to the statement, the enforcement became necessary following reports that some individuals use vehicles with covered or altered number plates to perpetrate crimes and evade identification.
“This ban is critical to the security of the state as it will enhance public safety, promote law and order, and strengthen the Command’s crime-fighting efforts,” the statement read.
The police said that starting Friday, any vehicle found violating the order would be impounded, and offenders would face penalties in accordance with traffic regulations.
The Command also clarified that Thursday, October 9, serves as a grace period for motorists to remove all plate covers and ensure compliance.
The directive prohibits all forms of number plate concealment, including dark covers, plastic films, fabrics, faded or damaged plates, and unauthorized or altered registration numbers not issued by the government.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed that the enforcement would be carried out “without fear or favour,” urging motorists, particularly public officials and security aides, to comply in the interest of public safety.
The Command assured residents of its continued commitment to maintaining peace, order, and a secure environment across Akwa Ibom State.
