May 25 (THEWILL) — Residents of Enen Atai Itam in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have continued to pay glowing tributes to Professor Efanga James Usua, a former Commissioner for Education in the defunct Cross River State, following the opening of a mourning house in honour of his late wife, Obonganwan Elizabeth Usua.

The opening ceremony, held at the family compound in Enen Atai Itam, was led by Rev. Essien Ekpo and attracted family members, church leaders, elders and community stakeholders who gathered to sympathise with the renowned academic and village head.

Among those in attendance were Evangelist Udeme E. Utip, Elder James Etim James, Elder Uwem Okpukpan and Elder Nyo Utip (Rtd).

Professor Usua, widely respected for his contributions to the education sector, is regarded as one of the intellectual figures behind the new edition of the popular Modern Biology textbook used in schools across Nigeria.

Community members described him as an academic icon whose service in government and education has positively impacted many lives.

Speakers at the event also reflected on the close relationship between the late Obonganwan Elizabeth Usua and her husband, describing her as a supportive and peaceful woman who stood firmly beside the former commissioner throughout his academic and public service career.

Many in the community praised Professor Usua for combining academic excellence with traditional leadership as the village head of Enen Atai Itam, noting that his humility and commitment to community development have earned him widespread respect among his people.

As part of the funeral activities, in a release by the bereaved family made available to journalists in Uyo, morning prayers will be conducted by the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN), Enen Atai congregation, at the deceased’s compound by 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26; Wednesday, May 27; and Thursday, May 28, 2026.

An evening of songs is also scheduled to be held at PCN Enen Atai Itam by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026.

Condolence visits are also expected to commence on Monday, May 25, 2026, until the funeral ceremonies are over.
