February 25, (THEWILL) — The political landscape in Edo State witnessed a significant shift on Tuesday, as former Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move widely viewed as part of ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), announced his decision during a reception organised in his honour at the ADC secretariat in Benin City, where he disclosed that his admiration for former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his vision for a new Nigeria played a central role in his defection.
According to him, the decision to join the ADC was driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to the party’s growth and align with a political movement focused on national transformation. He noted that Obi’s earlier move to the party on December 31, 2025, significantly influenced his choice.
“I joined the party to add value and to be part of the change that Obi represents”, Akpata said, expressing appreciation for the warm reception extended to him and the support received from members of the Obidient Movement.
The event attracted prominent political stakeholders, including former Edo State governors, John Odigie-Oyegun and Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, as well as former Senate Chief Whip, Roland Owie, alongside party leaders and supporters, signalling growing momentum within the ADC in the state.
Akpata formally received his party membership card from the Edo State Chairman, Kennedy Odion, who described the development as a major boost for the ADC structure and grassroots mobilisation efforts.
Speaking at the gathering, Obi reiterated his commitment to building a Nigeria that works for all citizens, stressing the need for a transition from a consumption-driven economy to one anchored on production, inclusive growth and equitable development.
Party leaders at the event expressed optimism about the ADC’s expanding coalition and its prospects in future elections. Osunbor, in his remarks, warned against potential attempts to undermine the electoral process, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant in safeguarding democratic institutions.
