February 24, (THEWILL) — The Presidency has confirmed the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and announced the immediate appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the new Acting IGP.
Reports indicate that Egbetokun stepped down on Tuesday, citing pressing family considerations, which brings an early end to a tenure that was originally slated to conclude in June 2027 following a recent extension under the amended Police Act.
In a statement signed on Tuesday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Bola Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of dedicated service.
The President highlighted his professionalism and steadfast commitment to strengthening the nation’s internal security architecture during his time at the helm.
Egbetokun was appointed in June 2023, and his departure marks a significant leadership transition for the Nigeria Police Force.
To ensure continuity amid the country’s current national security challenges, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General.
The Presidency cited Disu’s operational expertise, leadership skills, and his ability to provide steady guidance to the force during this critical period.
“The President is confident that AIG Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period,” the statement read.
In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the President is expected to soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as the substantive Inspector-General.
Once the council provides its consideration, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for formal confirmation.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.
Meanwhile, observers note that the transition comes at a time when the force is under intense pressure to address rising cases of kidnapping and banditry across several states.
