November 10, (THEWILL) — Despite recent declines in food prices across major markets in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), many households have yet to experience meaningful relief, as stagnant incomes and persistent inflation continue to weaken purchasing power.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that recent market data indicate slight reductions in the prices of key staples such as rice, beans, and yam, compared to the previous quarter. The decline is largely attributed to seasonal harvests and improved supply conditions.
However, the impact on household welfare has been limited, with consumers unable to take full advantage of lower prices due to rising costs in other essential areas, including transportation, rent, and education.
The latest figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show that while food inflation has eased marginally, headline inflation remains elevated, keeping real incomes under pressure. This imbalance continues to erode household consumption and restrict demand across urban centres, including Abuja.
Economic indicators further suggest that wage growth has not kept pace with the rate of inflation, creating a gap between nominal income and actual purchasing capacity. This has led to reduced spending power, particularly among fixed-income earners, despite temporary price corrections in food markets.
Until broader macroeconomic adjustments occur, particularly in wage levels and cost-of-living factors, the benefits of lower food prices are likely to remain out of reach for many households.
