June 23, (THEWILL) – Russian President, Vladimir Putin, on Monday, described the attacks on Iran as “unprovoked” and “unjustified”.
THEWILL reports that Israel and the United States have, differently launched several airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Speaking on Monday at a meeting with Tehran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, Putin condemned the strikes, saying, “This absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran is unjustified.”
Welcoming Araghchi’s visit as a chance to jointly address the crisis, Putin said, “We are glad you are here in Moscow.”
He emphasised the opportunity to “jointly assess the situation and explore solutions.”
The Russian leader reaffirmed his country’s firm stance, referencing earlier condemnations by the Foreign Ministry and at the UN. He underscored the enduring and strategic nature of Russia-Iran relations, rooted in mutual trust.
Putin pledged Moscow’s commitment to supporting the Iranian people and pursuing a peaceful resolution to the conflict, also requesting Araghchi to extend his regards to Ayatollah Khamenei and President Pezeshkian.
Moscow is a crucial backer of Iran, but has not swung forcefully behind its partner even as the United States launched strikes on its nuclear facilities over the weekend.
“There has been a new escalation of tensions in the region, and, of course, we condemn this and express our deep regret in this regard”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters shortly before Putin met Araghchi in the Kremlin.
Asked what specific support Russia might offer, Peskov told reporters: “It all depends on what Iran needs. We have offered our mediation services.”
Peskov also said the US strikes on Iran would not affect bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington, saying they were “different issues.”
