April 01, (THEWILL) — Russia President, Vladimir Putin, has called for a major rethink of global transport and logistics systems, highlighting emerging opportunities for more secure and diversified trade routes as geopolitical tensions reshape energy markets.
Speaking via video link from Moscow on Wednesday, Putin addressed participants at the 1st International Transport and Logistics Forum, holding at the Expoforum Exhibition Centre between April 1 and 3, 2026. He emphasised that ongoing developments in the Middle East are accelerating the need for resilient global supply chains.
According to him, tensions involving Iran and the broader regional conflict are already exerting a direct impact on global energy flows, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz — a critical artery responsible for roughly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil trade.
“The events in Iran are already directly affecting the energy markets and oil and gas transportation through the Strait of Hormuz”, Putin stated, noting that governments and corporations are increasingly prioritising not just speed and cost, but also the security and stability of logistics routes.
In what signals a potential strategic shift, the Russian leader presented his country as a dependable alternative hub for global transit. He stressed that Russian logistics corridors could offer reduced transit times while also insulating international trade from geopolitical shocks.
“Russia can offer the world such solutions and play an important role in forming a new architecture of global logistics and international trade as a whole”, he said, adding that diversification of transportation flows is now a key priority for many economies.
Putin’s remarks come at a time when heightened tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran have raised concerns over the safety of maritime routes in the Gulf region. The resulting uncertainty has contributed to volatility in global energy prices, prompting shipping firms and energy traders to reassess traditional routes and explore alternatives.
Despite the challenges, the forum in St. Petersburg has emerged as a platform for constructive engagement, drawing high-level participation from dozens of countries, multinational organisations, and industry leaders.
Discussions have centred on strengthening Eurasian transport corridors, advancing digital logistics solutions, and building resilient supply chains capable of withstanding external shocks.
In a move to sustain momentum, Putin proposed that the forum be institutionalised as a biennial event, providing a consistent platform for collaboration and innovation in global logistics.
