Religious Organisation Not Part Of Passport Process — NIS Reassures Nigerians

Immigration

May 04, (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reassured Nigerians that no religious organisation is involved in its passport application or payment process, firmly dismissing circulating claims as false and misleading.

In a public notice issued on Monday, and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja, the Service emphasised that its passport application system remains secure, transparent, and fully government-regulated, operating exclusively through its official online portal. It stressed that it has not authorised any religious body, private entity, or individual to act as an intermediary or collect payments on its behalf.

The clarification follows recent allegations suggesting that a religious organisation was embedded in the Service’s payment process. The NIS categorically refuted the claim, noting that a review of its authorised payment system confirms that only licensed and accredited payment service providers, clearly indicated on its portal, are involved in processing transactions.

Reaffirming its commitment to accountability and public trust, the Service warned that any third-party platforms or payment links claiming to facilitate passport applications outside its official channel are fraudulent and should be avoided. It added that payments made through unauthorised means are done at the applicant’s risk, with the Service not liable for any losses incurred.

The NIS disclosed that it has commenced investigations into the source of the misinformation, with preliminary findings pointing to individuals attempting to mislead the public or tarnish the agency’s reputation. It also assured that appropriate action would be taken against anyone found culpable.

The Service also urged Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to exercise caution, access services only via its official portal, and avoid dealings with unauthorised agents or platforms. It reiterated that it does not recognise or provide any alternative payment channels for passport-related services.

According to the statement, the NIS remains committed to strengthening its systems and monitoring processes to prevent fraud, misuse, and misrepresentation, while ensuring efficient and reliable service delivery.

For inquiries or assistance, members of the public are encouraged to reach out through the Service’s verified communication channels, including its official social media platforms and 24-hour contact centre.
