December 11, (THEWILL) – The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has declared the Ovia North-East/Ovia South-West Federal Constituency seat vacant following the election and inauguration of its former occupant, Dennis Idahosa, as Deputy Governor of Edo State.
This development came after the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, submitted a letter requesting the House to act in line with the law to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission to initiate the process of electing a replacement for Idahosa.
“Now that the member representing Ovia North-East/Ovia South-West Federal Constituency of Edo State has been elected and sworn in as the Deputy Governor of the State, his seat should be declared vacant,” Ihonvbere wrote in the letter read during Wednesday’s plenary.
In response, Speaker Abbas affirmed the decision, saying, “Honourable colleagues, with this announcement, it is my pleasure to declare the seat of Ovia North-East/Ovia South-West Federal Constituency vacant.”
This move sets the stage for INEC to conduct a by-election to fill the vacant seat and ensure representation for the people of the affected constituency in the House of Representatives.
