November 13, (THEWILL) – Republicans have again, secured majority control of the House of Representatives, solidifying leadership of both chambers of Congress.
The party has won at least 218 seats after edging out Democrats in several closely contested districts. Democrats have at least 211 seats.
Republicans on Wednesday, voted to return Mike Johnson as Speaker and Steve Scalise as House Majority Leader in the next Congress, which begins in January.
Meanwhile, President-elect, Donald Trump, has named Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida to serve as his attorney general.
“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponisation of our Justice System. Matt will end Weaponised Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organisations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department”, Trump wrote Wednesday, in a post on his Truth Social platform.
Reacting to the appointment, Gaetz said in a post on X that it would “be an honor to serve” in the role.
Trump also picked former Democratic congresswoman, Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence.
Gabbard, an Army National Guard veteran, unsuccessfully ran for president in 2020 as a Democrat but said she was leaving the Democratic Party in 2022. She campaigned with Trump and served on his transition team.
