September 19, (THEWILL) — Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory have suspended their indefinite strike.
The FCT chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-FCTA) announced the decision on Friday following the intervention of the Senate Committee on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters, as well as appeals from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The doctors had embarked on a seven-day warning strike on Monday to protest poor working conditions, unpaid salary arrears, unexplained deductions, and lack of essential medical equipment in FCT hospitals.
President of ARD-FCTA, Dr George Ebong, said the health sector in the territory has long been plagued by chronic underfunding, staff shortages, and poor infrastructure.
While confirming that the doctors will resume work on Monday, September 22, Ebong stressed that none of their demands had been met as of the time of suspension.
He added that the association would closely monitor the government’s response and would not hesitate to resume industrial action if the issues remain unresolved.
