There has been escalating civil unrest in Mozambique since the disputed election in October, won by ruling party, Frelimo. Opposition groups claimed the vote was rigged. At least 21 people were killed in the unrest after the country’s top court, on Monday, confirmed Frelimo’s victory.

While Police blamed the civil unrest for the prison riot, Mozambique Justice Minister, Helena Kida, however, disagreed that the prison riot had any connection with the political unrest.
