May 27, (THEWILL) — Governor Siminalayi Fubara, on Wednesday, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, unity, security and inclusive governance as Rivers State marked its 59th anniversary amid lingering political tensions in the state.
In a goodwill message delivered in Port Harcourt to commemorate the anniversary, Fubara said his government remained determined to implement policies and programmes that would promote peace, strengthen security and expand development across all parts of the state.
The anniversary celebration comes against the backdrop of the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, which has deepened divisions within the political class and heightened concerns over governance and stability in the oil-rich state.
Rivers State was created on May 27, 1967, by the administration of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.
Despite the challenges confronting the state, the governor said Rivers people had continued to demonstrate resilience, strength and an enduring spirit of unity.
According to him, the bond of brotherhood among the various ethnic nationalities in the state had remained a major source of strength and the foundation for peace, stability and progress.
“We have continued to live together peacefully in the interest of the state”, Fubara stated.
The governor further described Rivers as one of the major drivers of Nigeria’s economy, noting that the state’s relevance extended beyond its oil and gas wealth.
According to him, Rivers people had continued to distinguish themselves in academia, jurisprudence, business, entertainment, public service and sports, among other sectors.
Fubara stressed that governance under his administration would remain people-centred and impactful, with equal attention given to every local government area of the state. He also commended the founding leaders of Rivers State for preserving the ideals of peace, unity and coexistence over the years.
The governor urged youths in the state to remain hopeful, responsible and committed to building a greater Rivers State through innovation, patriotism and hard work. He equally acknowledged the contributions of women to societal growth and stability, describing them as indispensable partners in the development of the state.
“I acknowledge the role of women in strengthening families, communities and society. You are indeed indispensable partners in the continued growth and stability of our dear state”, he said.
Fubara further urged residents to use the anniversary celebration as an opportunity to reflect and renew their commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, dialogue and collective progress.
