January 08, (THEWILL) — The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Emeka Beke, has rejected moves by the State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the process as ill-advised and capable of destabilising the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the party’s spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, said the party had taken note of “the latest unfortunate developments” from the Assembly but warned that resorting to impeachment would undermine democratic stability and the progress recorded by the APC-led government in the state.
While acknowledging the independence of the legislature and its constitutional role of checks and balances, the APC said the current impeachment push was unacceptable. “Our position as of today on this matter is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy”, the party declared.
The APC cautioned against what it described as the re-emergence of internal political strife, insisting that disagreements that previously rocked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should not be imported into the APC fold in Rivers State.
Addressing claims that the impeachment threat was linked to budgetary issues, the party recalled that during the period of emergency rule, a budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025 and duly approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025. The approved budget, totalling ₦1.485 trillion, was said to be valid for one year and expected to run until August 2026.
It further noted that the governor is constitutionally permitted to operate within a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year and may choose not to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with the existing appropriation.
Consequently, the party urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly APC lawmakers, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the government. It emphasised that Governor Fubara’s administration must not be undermined by what it termed “fratricidal disagreements.”
“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the Government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilised,” the statement said.
The Beke-led faction called on lawmakers to immediately discontinue the impeachment process, warning that it could tarnish the image of the APC and stall the ongoing development of Rivers State.
It further appealed for calm and urged political actors to allow democracy, rather than “politicocracy,” to prevail in the state.
