January 19, (THEWILL) — Elder statesman Admiral Festus Porbeni (rtd) has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to embrace reconciliation and dialogue as political tension continues to brew in Rivers State.
In an open letter addressed to both leaders on Monday, January 19, 2026, Porbeni expressed deep concern for the peace and stability of the state, warning that prolonged conflict could undermine governance and stall development.
Porbeni, a former Minister of Transport and pioneer Defence Adviser to Equatorial Guinea, recalled past political crises in the state, noting that ordinary citizens always bear the brunt of elite disputes.
He stressed that Rivers State is too resource-rich and too scarred by previous turmoil to be dragged into avoidable conflict, adding that harmony is the foundation for economic growth and investor confidence.
The retired naval chief urged both leaders to rise above personal grievances and place the collective interest of Rivers people above all else.
“Political power is temporary, but the consequences of today’s actions will endure long after titles are gone,” Porbeni said, calling for restraint, mutual respect, and immediate cooperation.
