March 19, (THEWILL) – The Presidential Amnesty Programme has cautioned ex-agitators against being drawn into the unfolding political crisis in Rivers State.
In a statement personally signed by its Administrator, Dr. Denis Otuaro, PAP urged all former militants and beneficiaries of the amnesty programme to resist any attempt to use them as instruments of violence amid the constitutional developments in the state.
“I appeal to you to refrain from engaging in violent activities or allowing yourselves to be used for actions capable of plunging the Niger Delta into chaos,” Otuaro said.
He reminded ex-agitators of their role as critical stakeholders and ambassadors of peace, stressing the need to safeguard the stability of the region for the safety and livelihoods of its people.
The PAP Administrator also warned that “some merchants of violence will attempt to exploit the tensions in Rivers State for political gains, using ex-agitators as cannon fodder to disrupt the peace for selfish interests.”
He urged all former militants to reject such overtures, emphasizing that the Niger Delta had suffered enough instability over the years.
“The region must not be thrown into further turmoil due to the ongoing situation in Rivers State,” he added.
Otuaro further called on ex-agitators, PAP beneficiaries, and the people of the Niger Delta to refrain from acts of sabotage, particularly targeting oil, gas, and other government assets in the region.
