July 7 (THEWILL) — The Rivers State Police Command has assured residents of their safety as Halliburton Energy Services Nigeria Limited begins the controlled disposal of expired explosive materials in Tai Local Government Area of the state.
THEWILL reports that the disposal exercise, approved by the police after the explosives were certified expired by relevant experts, is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, July 8, to Friday, July 10, 2026, at Kporghor Community in Tai Local Government Area.
The assurance was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Command, Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
According to the statement, the explosive materials in Halliburton Energy Services Nigeria Limited’s custody had undergone technical examination and were confirmed by relevant experts to have expired, necessitating their safe destruction.
“The Rivers State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that approval has been granted to Halliburton Energy Services Nigeria Limited to render and destroy some explosive materials in its custody, which have been examined by relevant experts and found to have expired,” the statement read.
The Command said the disposal operation would be conducted by operatives of its Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit based in Port Harcourt, using established safety procedures for the destruction of hazardous explosive materials.
It advised residents of Kporghor Community and neighbouring areas not to be alarmed by loud explosive sounds that may occur during the controlled detonation process.
“The general public and indeed residents of Kporghor Community are hereby enjoined not to panic if they hear deafening loud sounds emanating from the exercise, as every precautionary measure has been put in place to avert any danger,” the statement added.
The police reiterated that comprehensive safety measures had been put in place to ensure the operation is carried out without endangering lives, property or the environment.
The command also appealed to residents to cooperate with security personnel and avoid the designated disposal site throughout the three-day exercise, stressing that the operation is a routine safety procedure aimed at preventing the risks associated with storing expired explosive materials.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring that all explosive disposal operations in the state are conducted in accordance with established safety standards.
