March 11, (THEWILL) — The Senate has officially confirmed Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, clearing the way for him to succeed Doris Uzoka-Anite, who was reassigned to serve as Minister of Budget and National Planning (State).
The confirmation was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio after lawmakers approved Oyedele through a voice vote at the Committee of the Whole.
This follows an extensive screening session held on Wednesday, during which senators spent over two hours questioning the nominee about his experience, fiscal policies, and plans for the ministry.
Oyedele, who previously served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, described his nomination as a call to serve Nigeria at a critical time.
“With over two decades of experience working with national governments, multilateral institutions, and global corporations, my journey across the private sector, academia, and public policy has focused on fiscal governance and economic transformation.
However, this moment is not about personal accomplishments; it is a call to serve at a critical time when Nigeria faces significant fiscal challenges and remarkable opportunities,” he told the Senate.
Oyedele commended President Bola Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him and expressed gratitude to the Senate for allowing him to share his vision for Nigeria’s fiscal policy.
Before his ministerial appointment, Oyedele led the tax reforms committee, which oversaw the enactment of a new tax regime in Nigeria. Appointed in July 2023, he and his team spent over two years revamping the nation’s tax laws, culminating in their implementation on January 1, 2026.
The new tax laws are designed to transform tax administration, improve revenue generation, create a better business environment, and attract domestic and foreign investment. Despite initial resistance, the reforms have been widely praised as a major milestone in Nigeria’s fiscal governance.
As Minister of State for Finance, Oyedele is expected to support the Federal Government’s fiscal agenda, oversee effective tax administration, and contribute to policy reforms aimed at economic stability and growth.
