Opeyemi Agbaje

November 11, (THEWILL) — The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Olukayode Opeyemi Agbaje as the new Chairman of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).

Agbaje, who represents the South-West, was nominated by President Bola Tinubu to head the commission.

The Senate also confirmed four other nominees as national commissioners. They are: Hafiz Muhammad Kawu Ibrahim (Technical, South-West), Samuel Chigizie Uwandu (Inspectorate, South-East), Charles Efe Sylvester Emukowhate (Finance, South-South), and Bello Abubakar Malabu (Administration, North-East).

Their confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, chaired by Senator Oluwole Fasuyi Cyril.

Presiding over the plenary, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau commended President Tinubu for the nominations, describing the appointees as competent and experienced.

“We thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for nominating these outstanding Nigerians. We are confident they will add value to the commission,” Barau said.

Agbaje is a former Executive Director of Metropolitan Bank and a former Assistant General Manager at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), with more than four decades of experience spanning law, banking, finance, academia, and business consulting.

A law graduate of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), he was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1986 and later obtained a master’s degree in law from the University of Lagos in 1989.

He also earned an MBA from IESE Business School, Spain, in 1997, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Business Administration at Eaton Business School.

Agbaje worked in the law firm of Kola Awodein & Co. and the legal department of First Bank before joining GTBank in 1990 as a foundation staff member, rising to Assistant General Manager within eight years.

He served on the board of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund from 2011 to 2019, and later as CEO of the Ogun State Security Trust Fund from 2019 to 2021.
