May 06, (THEWILL) — The Minority Whip of the Senate, Senator Tony Nwoye, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The development was made known during plenary on Wednesday, when Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read Nwoye’s resignation and defection letter before lawmakers.
Following the announcement, Akpabio directed the Clerk of the Senate to immediately update the legislative records to reflect the senator’s new party affiliation.
Nwoye, who represents Anambra South Senatorial District, said his decision to leave the ADC was informed by prolonged internal disputes and ongoing court cases which, according to him, had severely undermined the party’s cohesion and overall effectiveness.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and my intention to defect to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)”, he stated.
Nwoye further explained that the crises within the party structure had reached a point where continued membership was no longer tenable.
“The decision has become necessary due to internal divisions and the ongoing multiple litigations at the Federal High Court and court judgement affecting the party which unfortunately affected the creation and stability of the party”, Nwoye added.
Senate President Akpabio acknowledged the communication on the floor and wished the senator well in his new political alignment, while proceedings continued without disruption.
