January 29, (THEWILL) — The Senate has commenced a closed door session to consider the Electoral Act 2022 Repeal and Re-enactment Bill 2026. This move signals a commitment to strengthening the integrity of the electoral process in Nigeria.
Lawmakers are currently reviewing documents submitted by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Simon Lalong, ahead of a full legislative debate.
The session was convened to allow for a thorough examination of proposed amendments and supporting materials.
This follows a deferral on Wednesday that provided lawmakers with additional time to prepare for the review.
Although the House of Representatives has already passed the bill, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stressed the importance of careful scrutiny.
He noted the critical role of the bill in ensuring credible elections and stated that the Senate must take its time to ensure justice is done so that disputes do not end up at the tribunal.
The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters reported that a clause by clause analysis shows the bill would leave a lasting legacy of integrity and boost public confidence.
The committee recommended that the Senate pass the bill as amended to expand voter participation and safeguard against fraud.
