May 04, (THEWILL) — The Kano Strategic Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested six suspects in a coordinated operation to curb drug-related activities around Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
The arrests followed a targeted raid on identified hotspots in and around the institution’s old campus, as part of the agency’s ongoing enforcement initiative tagged Operation Sharar Mafaka. The operation was launched in response to a formal complaint by the university management over rising concerns about illicit drug activities within the area.
The Commander of the NDLEA in Kano, Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, who disclosed this in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, said the suspects were apprehended for trespassing and engaging in the sale and consumption of prohibited substances within and around the university premises.
Yahaya-Lawal stated that various quantities of illicit substances believed to be narcotics were recovered during the operation. He added that items linked to the illegal activities were immediately impounded and destroyed to render them unusable.
“This action demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a drug-free environment where students, staff and their families can live and work in safety”, he said.
The NDLEA boss assured that the Command would sustain the momentum under Operation Sharar Mafaka to dislodge all drug joints operating within the university environment and beyond.
He attributed the success of the operation to effective collaboration between the agency and the university authorities, noting that the timely report from the institution enabled a swift response.
Yahaya-Lawal reiterated that the agency would not tolerate the use of government or educational facilities for drug-related activities, warning that offenders would be brought to justice.
He also called on members of the public and institutions to support the agency’s efforts by reporting suspicious activities, stressing that collective vigilance remains key to eliminating drug abuse and trafficking in the state.
