April 14, (THEWILL) — A wave of tributes swept across Nigeria’s traditional institution over the weekend as the late Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King (Dr) Dandeson Douglas Jaja, was laid to rest, drawing eminent monarchs and dignitaries from across the South-South region.
Leading the honours was the Oku Ibom Ibibio and President General of the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr) Solomon Daniel Etuk, who described the monarch’s passing as a profound loss not only to Rivers State but to Nigeria’s traditional leadership structure.
Speaking during the funeral service held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Opobo Town, Etuk portrayed the late king as a symbol of peace, unity, and statesmanship whose influence transcended his domain
He noted that the deceased monarch distinguished himself as a bridge builder and a stabilising force within the traditional institution.
“Here was a man of immense value, an enigma and an epitome of peace. He made distinctive marks as a traditional ruler and will be remembered for his contributions to unity, cultural heritage, and national development”, Etuk said.
The Ibibio patriarch, who led a delegation of Akwa Ibom traditional rulers to the ceremony, highlighted the late king’s commitment to progressive leadership, noting his efforts in promoting education, youth empowerment, healthcare, and the overall well-being of his people.
Until his death at 83, King Jaja, who also served as Chairman of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council, commanded widespread respect for his humility, diplomacy, and visionary leadership style.
Etuk extended condolences to the royal family, the Opobo Kingdom, and the Rivers State Government, urging them to find strength in the monarch’s enduring legacy.
He also expressed optimism over the future of the kingdom under the incoming ruler, Alabo Charles Mac-Pepple Jaja (Jeki VI), urging him to uphold the values and legacies established by his predecessor.
King Jaja, born April 28, 1942, was widely regarded as one of the most influential traditional rulers in the Niger Delta, with a legacy anchored on unity, cultural preservation, and community development.
