
March 25, (THEWILL) — Airtel Africa has taken a major step toward bridging the connectivity gap across underserved regions by successfully testing satellite-to-mobile services in Kenya in partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Sunil Taldar, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the trial demonstrated how standard smartphones can connect directly to satellites in areas without traditional network coverage.
The test, conducted in remote parts of Kenya lacking terrestrial mobile signals, enabled 4G-compatible devices to access communication services via Starlink satellites. Users were able to carry out basic but essential digital activities, including messaging, voice calls through apps like WhatsApp, navigation, and mobile financial transactions. These capabilities highlight the potential for satellite-backed mobile networks to support everyday communication needs in hard-to-reach areas.
This milestone forms part of Airtel Africa’s broader strategy to expand connectivity across its 14 markets, including Nigeria, where network gaps remain a challenge in rural and sparsely populated regions. By leveraging SpaceX’s satellite infrastructure, the telecom operator aims to complement existing ground-based networks rather than replace them.
According to Taldar, insights gathered from the Kenya trial will play a critical role in shaping future rollouts. However, full deployment across Airtel Africa’s footprint will depend on regulatory approvals in each market.
The initiative aligns with Starlink’s previously announced roadmap to introduce direct-to-mobile services globally. The rollout is expected to begin with basic text messaging capabilities, followed by voice, data, and Internet of Things (IoT) services as the technology matures.
A key component of the collaboration is Starlink’s next-generation Direct-to-Cell system. This technology is designed to significantly enhance satellite connectivity by delivering speeds up to 20 times faster than earlier satellite-based solutions. The improvement could mark a turning point in making satellite internet more practical for everyday mobile use, especially in regions where building traditional telecom infrastructure is costly or impractical.
For Africa, where millions still lack reliable internet access, the success of such trials signals a transformative opportunity. If scaled effectively, satellite-to-mobile connectivity could accelerate financial inclusion, improve access to digital services, and support economic growth in previously disconnected communities.
