March 25, (THEWILL) — OpenAI has shut down its AI video-generation tool, Sora, bringing an end to its partnership with The Walt Disney Company.

Sora, which launched in 2024 and gained global attention for creating realistic videos from simple prompts, is being discontinued as OpenAI shifts focus to other areas of artificial intelligence.

The move also ends its planned collaboration with Disney, which had been exploring how to use the technology for entertainment projects.

In a statement, Disney said it respects OpenAI’s decision and will continue to explore AI opportunities with other platforms while protecting intellectual property and creators’ rights.

The partnership had been seen as a major step in combining AI tools with entertainment content. Disney was expected to allow the use of some of its characters as part of the project.

However, the decision came as a surprise, with reports indicating that both companies were still working together shortly before the shutdown.

OpenAI said it is moving away from video-generation tools to focus on more advanced AI systems, including technologies capable of completing tasks with little human input.

Despite the closure of Sora, the company confirmed that image-generation tools within ChatGPT will continue to operate.

With Sora now discontinued, Disney is expected to seek new partners as it continues to explore the use of AI in film and media.
