August 14, (THEWILL) — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will on Friday, August 15, arraign 23 of the 93 suspected internet fraudsters arrested on Sunday at a hotel within the precincts of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The suspects are to be arraigned before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.
In a statement on Thursday, the EFCC said profiling showed that almost all those arrested were indicted for offences bordering on impersonation, identity theft, and internet fraud.
The arraignment, to be conducted in batches, follows their arrest during what the agency described as a “pool party” to celebrate their alleged criminal exploits.
According to the EFCC, the party was originally planned for two separate venues but was moved to the hotel within OOPL in a bid to evade possible arrest.
“The planners got wind of the Commission’s intelligence and relocated to OOPL expecting some sort of cover from arrest,” the statement read.
The agency clarified that the former president’s facility was not a target of the sting operation, stressing that the focus was on the suspects, who have allegedly confessed to engaging in internet crimes.
The EFCC said the remaining suspects would be arraigned in due course.
