September 28, (THEWILL) — A stowaway was found dead in the landing gear of an American Airlines jet that arrived at Charlotte Douglas International Airport from Europe on Sunday morning.
Police said the body was discovered during routine checks shortly after the aircraft landed. Homicide detectives are leading the investigation, though the victim’s identity and nationality have not yet been confirmed.
Authorities are working with federal and international partners to determine how the individual gained access to the aircraft.
American Airlines said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies.
Aviation experts note that wheel-well stowaway incidents are rare but usually fatal due to extreme cold, lack of oxygen, and mechanical hazards at cruising altitude.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact Charlotte Crime Stoppers.
