July 11, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s Super Falcons have unveiled a 25-player squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as they prepare to defend their continental crown in Morocco.
Head coach Justine Madugu announced the squad through the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), selecting a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talents for the tournament, which will take place from July 26 to August 16.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade will lead the nine-time African champions, while six-time African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala is included as Nigeria targets a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie headlines the goalkeeping department alongside Comfort Erhabor and Fatima Oloko. However, defender Ashleigh Plumptre was not considered after continuing her recovery from surgery.
The defensive unit comprises experienced campaigners Osinachi Ohale and Michelle Alozie, alongside Oluwatosin Demehin, Rofiat Imuran, Shukurat Oladipo, Glory Ogbonna, Sikiratu Isah, and Christy Ucheibe.
In midfield, Madugu has selected Halimatu Ayinde, Deborah Abiodun, Toni Payne, and Jennifer Echegini to partner skipper Ajibade, while the attacking options include Oshoala, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Francisca Ordega, Gift Monday, Uchenna Kanu, Folashade Ijamilusi, Omorinsola Babajide, and Joy Omewa.
The squad features players competing across Europe’s top leagues, North America, Asia, and the Nigerian Women’s Football League, providing a balanced mix of international experience and domestic talent.
Nigeria heads into the tournament as the most successful nation in African women’s football, having lifted the trophy 10 times.
The Super Falcons will also be aiming to retain the title they won in the previous edition after defeating hosts Morocco in the final.
Drawn in Group C, Nigeria will begin their campaign against tournament debutants Malawi on July 28 before facing Zambia on August 1 in what is expected to be the group’s biggest fixture.
The Super Falcons will conclude the group stage against Egypt on August 5 as they seek a place in the knockout rounds.
In addition to the continental title, qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil is also at stake, with the four semi-finalists earning automatic qualification for the global tournament.
