March 05, (THEWILL) — Suspected gunmen believed to be members of the Lakurawa terror group have attacked a police border checkpoint along the Bakin Ruwa–Maje road in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing two police officers and setting the checkpoint ablaze.
THEWILL gathered that the assailants stormed the checkpoint in large numbers and opened fire indiscriminately on officers on duty before burning down the tent used by the policemen at the post.
A video showing the burnt checkpoint has been circulating on social media platforms in the state, raising fresh concerns among residents over the growing wave of attacks along the border communities.
Sources said the latest incident marks the third attack along the Bakin Ruwa–Maje border axis in recent times. In previous attacks, gunmen reportedly killed officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service operating in the area.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, who arrived heavily armed, launched a sudden assault on the checkpoint, leaving the officers little opportunity to repel the attack before the facility was set on fire.
Confirming the incident to journalists, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bashir Usman, said two officers were killed during the attack, while the checkpoint tents were destroyed by the assailants.
“The attackers killed two of our officers and burnt down the checkpoint, but the police are on top of the situation. I will issue further details,” Usman told newsmen on Thursday.
Security authorities have yet to provide further information on whether additional security personnel have been deployed to the area or if any arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
