Containers-imports

March 16, (THEWILL) — Nigerian manufacturers and other import-dependent businesses are expected to save about $1.4 billion annually following the removal of tariffs on selected Chinese imports, a development aimed at reducing production costs and boosting industrial growth.

The tariff waiver means companies will no longer pay import duties that previously ranged between about 5 and 20 percent on many goods sourced from China, including machinery, industrial equipment and intermediate raw materials widely used by manufacturers.

Industry stakeholders say the move will significantly lower the cost of importing critical production inputs from China, which remains one of Nigeria’s largest trading partners.

Manufacturers have long complained that high import duties, foreign exchange volatility, and rising operational costs have squeezed profit margins and increased the prices of finished goods.

The removal of tariffs is therefore expected to ease cost pressures and improve competitiveness across several sectors.

Analysts note that the estimated $1.4 billion annual savings could allow companies to reinvest in expansion, upgrade machinery, and increase production capacity, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, electronics, and retail.

Nigeria imports a substantial volume of goods from China every year, and the elimination of the 5–20 percent duty on selected imports is expected to translate into significant savings for businesses that rely heavily on foreign inputs.

However, some experts caution that while the policy could reduce production costs, it may also expose local manufacturers to stronger competition if cheaper imported finished goods enter the market.

Despite these concerns, stakeholders believe the tariff removal could support industrial productivity, improve supply chains, and strengthen trade relations between Nigeria and China in the long term.
