April 14, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, commissioned the new Corporate Headquarters of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) in Abuja, describing the facility as a major step in the Federal Government’s drive to modernise tax administration and deepen ongoing fiscal reforms.
The newly completed complex, located in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, will serve as the central operational headquarters of the Nigerian Revenue Service. The structure comprises three towers rising up to 16 floors and is designed to accommodate about 3,000 employees, bringing multiple operational units of the agency under one coordinated administrative hub.
The headquarters is expected to play a key role in supporting the implementation of recent tax reform laws to improve revenue mobilisation, expand the tax base, and enhance compliance across federal, state, and local government levels. The reforms are also part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to reduce reliance on oil revenue, strengthen non-oil income sources, and improve transparency in public financial management.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu said the new facility reflects a shift towards transparency and accountability in taxation, stressing that trust remains central to effective revenue administration.
According to him, a lack of transparency weakens compliance and undermines the legitimacy of the tax system.
“No government can demand much from its people when the taxation system is opaque”, Tinubu said.
The President added that ongoing reforms were designed to encourage productivity and improve taxpayer compliance by making the system fairer and more efficient.
He described the initial outcomes of the tax reform programme as positive, saying they have been “encouraging” and “fantastic”, attributing the progress to deliberate policy direction and structured implementation.
“The results so far are encouraging and fantastic”, he said, noting that careful planning was responsible for early gains recorded under the new framework.
Tinubu further stressed that the new headquarters represents more than infrastructure, but a symbol of institutional renewal and higher standards in public service delivery. He called on the Nigerian Revenue Service to evolve into a model institution that prioritises efficiency, accountability, and responsiveness.
“It must become a model institution that inspires confidence both at home and abroad”, the President said, adding that the agency must go beyond revenue collection to become a service-oriented institution that earns public trust through professionalism and performance.
President Tinubu also commended Nigerians for their resilience amid ongoing economic reforms, urging citizens to remain patient as structural adjustments begin to yield long-term benefits.
He noted that Nigeria’s economic future depends on sustained reform implementation and collective commitment to building stronger, more transparent institutions capable of supporting national development goals.
