February 12, (THEWILL) — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has assured Nigerians of minimal impact on electricity supply as Seplat Energy Plc begins scheduled routine maintenance on its gas production facilities.
The maintenance, which commenced today, February 12, and is expected to run through February 15, 2026, will cause a temporary reduction in gas supply to the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC) pipeline network.
NNPC disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh.
He noted that Seplat Energy is a joint venture partner of NNPC Ltd and a key supplier of gas into the NGIC pipeline network, contributing significantly to the nation’s domestic power grid.
According to the statement, the planned maintenance is part of standard industry safety and asset integrity protocols designed to ensure the continued reliability, efficiency, and safe operation of critical gas infrastructure.
The company stated that periodic maintenance of this nature is essential to sustain optimal system performance, strengthen operational resilience, and minimize the risk of unplanned outages.
The national oil company explained that the four-day maintenance exercise would result in a temporary reduction in gas supply into the NGIC network, which may lead to reduced gas availability to some thermal power generation companies.
While the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has warned of a potential drop of approximately 935MW in generation capacity, NNPC stressed that any impact on electricity generation is expected to be modest and short-lived.
Proactive measures have been put in place to cushion the effect on the power sector. NNPC Ltd and Seplat Energy are working closely to ensure the maintenance is executed safely and completed as scheduled.
In addition, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML) is engaging alternative gas suppliers to mitigate anticipated supply gaps and maintain stability across the gas network during the maintenance period.
Full gas supply into the NGIC system is expected to resume promptly upon completion of the maintenance exercise on February 16, enabling affected power generation companies to return to normal operations.
The NNPC added that it would provide further updates as necessary as part of its broader Gas Master Plan 2026, which aims to drive industrialization and strengthen national energy security.
