March 25, (THEWILL) — Iran’s military, on Wednesday, claimed it launched coastal cruise missiles targeting the USS Abraham Lincoln, marking a fresh flashpoint in the escalating confrontation in the Middle East.
According to Iranian state media, including Press TV and the Islamic Republic News Agency, the missiles were fired at the US carrier strike group operating in nearby waters. A video released by Press TV purportedly showed the launch, while officials described the move as a direct warning to American forces in the region.
The commander of the Iranian Navy, Shahram Irani, said the movements of the “enemy” aircraft carrier were under continuous monitoring. He warned that the vessel would face “powerful strikes” once it entered the range of Iran’s missile systems.
IRNA reported that the missile launch forced the carrier group to change position, although there has been no independent verification of the claim. The United States has not confirmed the incident.
The development comes against the backdrop of intensifying hostilities involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Since February 28, US and Israeli forces have carried out sustained airstrikes on Iranian targets, which Tehran says have killed more than 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In retaliation, Iran has launched waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as neighbouring countries such as Jordan and Iraq, alongside Gulf states hosting US military assets. The attacks have resulted in casualties, infrastructure damage and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
